LoriMoreno Said: Loved this Book about Looking for Love ( Aug. 18th 2010 )

Inspiring Memoir That Reads Like a Novel

I picked up Julie Spira's book The Perils of Cyber-Dating based upon a recommendation from a friend and found it to be a terrific summer read. I admire the author's courage to share her collection of stories and life lessons with the world.

Julie brings her humor and wit, and stays optimistic, even under the most difficult of situations. I found her insight in the online dating world to be enlightening. I know so many people who have dated online who would enjoy this memoir and could relate to her tales.

The book offered dating advice, especially for those who are going on first dates, and first hand experience from someone who was one of the first in the online dating industry. It was well-written, paced well, and a page-turner. It truly reads like a romance novel.

Although I am happily married, I recommend this book to singles and couples, male and female, who care about matters of the heart and appreciate the sincerity and emotions involved with looking for love online.

If you've ever had your heart broken and needed to start your life over again, this book is for you.

Reading Enthusiast Said: Authentic and Personal ( Jul. 14th 2010 )

I read the book with great empathy for the author in her quest to find love online. The Perils of Cyber-Dating both was entertaining as well as educational. The author shared her personal journey in a way that singles of any age could relate to. It was authentic and personal. It appears she likes the finer things in life. So do the girls in Sex and the City, which I also enjoy watching. It was humorous at times and sad at other times. It's a timely and very well-written memoir. I finished reading it one night.

I don't agree with the raving reviews this book got. I can't say it's a MUST read or a compelling story. What it is, is a"list of dates" and only few because she goes round in circles to the same ones several times. Language is repetitive too.
Where is the advice against perils? "The navigation guide"?
Her main interest are designer labels. So her dates and love requirements are probably straight forward and apropos:a big car, a customized Harley (with)$50,000 paint job), flying to Acapulco for a romantic weekend of eating strawberries and chocolates and then it's a good match. For someone who is constantly drinking champagne, she should be able to spell Veuve Cliquot correctly. Or her editor should.
Well, she is "averaging a carat per decade"...Shallow, shallow...not even hilarious.
I should have trusted the one negative comment on here...

LT in L.A. Said: This is a MUST READ FOR ONLINE DATERS ( Mar. 1st 2010 )

Ms. Spira's book is a MUST READ FOR ONLINE DATERS. There are various books out there about online dating. Some of them are very mechanical, others purely anectdotal. This book seems to have the best of both. The Perils of Cyber-Dating does a great job of not only discussing how to navigate the online dating world, but also shares the joy and heartaches that people will experience in dating in general.

The author is extremely brave: her candor is so "out there" that you can't help but feel vicariously her ups and downs as she sifts through the myraid of dating profiles. These personal stories and episodes really "tell it like it is" for those of us who are trying to find love in an Internet world.

As a guy, I came away with lots of insights about how to write a profile that will attract more responses from women. I also learned about what kind of things you don't want to put into a profile. In addition, I found the book to be very helpful with guidance on handling the first 2-3 dates with someone who you meet online.

Indeed, the book discussed a great deal about dating etiquette in the 21st Century. In some ways, this books shows that many of rules or "best practices" about dating have not changed. On the other hand, the book also spells out the "new kinds of behavior" that are acceptable, and well as inappropriate conduct, in today's high tech world.

I found the book to be well written. It is well paced: there are just enough relevant details to keep you turning the pages. Moreover, she does an excellent job of laying out the theme or message of a particular chapter or episode within a chapter, by selecting the appropriate amount of detail. Unlike other "tell all" books, Ms. Spira does not bury you or overwhelm you with petty or irrelevant facts.

What really makes the book credible and authentic is the fact that Ms. Spira really tells her stories from the heart without embellishment or exaggeration. Some of her stories reflect great pain, and/or great humor. Some have something in between. This authenticity creates a book that is very believeable, and allows the reader to come away with "real life" insights that can be applied to his/her own online dating efforts.

In addition to baring her soul and talking about her mistakes, Ms. Spira also talks about triumphs or positive experiences that give the reader hope of finding true love in Cyberspace. In that respect it is a balanced, well thought out book.
